Fishermen find young sea cow onshore

Two fishermen from Brgy. Binulasan found an injured young sea cow (dugong) onshore in the morning of January 9, 2014. Said fishermen immediately contacted the local government of Infanta and reported the incident. Officers of LGU Infanta then and there contacted the DENR to seek assistance since the jurisdiction over endangered species lies with the said agency.

Dr. Rizza Salinas, a veterinarian from the Biodiversity Management Bureau (formerly Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau) and Mr. Jeff Cruz, came in and led in rescuing the injured sea cow. A team from the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network led by Dr. Lemnuel V. Aragones also came in and assisted in giving treatment to the injured sea cow.

Wildlife authorities decided to name the sea cow as BiMBi. Its name is associated with their agency’s new name, the Biodiversity Management Bureau or BMB. BiMBi was transferred to Ocean Park the following day for further treatment and rehabilitation.
